Every figure on the site, as plain files you can open in a spreadsheet. Each file is built from one snapshot of the data, and the scores can be reproduced from the z-scores file alone.
Data vintage: snapshot of 6 November 2026, generated 6 November 2026. Each value keeps its source, vintage and fetch date in the observations file.
What is available
The files below are all the data behind the site, together about 17.3 MB. Download them one at a time; there is no archive.
| File | What it holds | Size |

| observations.csv | Every actual (non-projection) value in the snapshot: country, metric, year, value, source, licence, vintage, fetch date and any review flag. | 4.6 MB |
| projections.csv | IMF projections, in the same columns. Shown dashed on the site and never ranked. | 194.8 KB |
| sources.csv | One row per source: its licence (short ID and full text), URL and attribution text, filled in with the fetch date and vintage. | 5.2 KB |
| scores.csv | One row per ranked country: overall score and rank, and each pillar's score, rank and how many of its metrics had a value. | 1.6 KB |
| zscores.csv | One row per country and ranked metric: the value and year used (including carried-forward values), the z-score and the metric rank. | 54.5 KB |
| snapshot.json | The snapshot the files were built from, unchanged. Use it if you want the raw structure. | 7.8 MB |
| README.txt | Column meanings, the scoring rules in full, and the spreadsheet steps for reproducing a rank. | 9.3 KB |
Metric files: one CSV per metric (30 files)
Each file holds the actual observations of one metric, with the same columns as observations.csv. Ranked metrics feed the scores; context metrics are published and not scored.

Reproduce a rank
Every score follows the same rules, set out in full in the README. In short: each metric is converted to a z-score across the 28 countries; the z-scores of a pillar are averaged; the two pillar scores are averaged for the overall score; and ranks are competition ranks, 1 = best.
- Latest common year. For each metric, the most recent year in which at least 25 of the 28 countries have a value. A country missing that year uses its own value from up to two years earlier, marked as carried forward.
- z-score. (value minus the mean) divided by the population standard deviation, across the countries with a value. Lower-is-better metrics are sign-flipped. Results are capped at plus or minus 3 and rounded to four decimal places.
- Pillar score. The mean of a country's z-scores in that pillar. A country needs at least 70% of a pillar's metrics to have a pillar score and rank; otherwise both are left blank.
- Overall score. The mean of the pillar scores. Blank if any pillar is blank.
Worked example: the UK's z-score for GNI per head, PPP
The numbers below come straight from zscores.csv (rows where metric_id is gni_pc_ppp). Each step can be typed into a spreadsheet.
- Take the value for each country that has one: 28 countries. Their mean is 52,668.32.
- Take the population standard deviation (divide the sum of squared differences by 28, then take the square root). It is 13,924.97. Use STDEVP in a spreadsheet, not STDEV.
- The UK value is 52,643.48 (2024). Its distance from the mean is -24.84, so its raw z-score is -0.0018.
- This metric is higher-is-better, so the sign stays as it is. The cap at plus or minus 3 does not bind here, and rounding to four decimal places gives -0.0018.
- The published z-score in zscores.csv is -0.0018: the same figure.
- The UK's metric rank is 13 of 28: 12 countries have a value above the UK's, so the rank is 13.
Source for the UK value: worldbank (code NY.GNP.PCAP.PP.KD), vintage 2026-10-08, fetched 2026-11-06.
Then the pillar and overall scores
The UK's z-scores in each pillar are averaged, rounded to four decimal places, and the two pillar scores are averaged for the overall score. The same calculation for the UK, from zscores.csv, gives the figures in scores.csv:
| Score | Metrics with a value | Average of z-scores |
|---|---|---|
| Economy | 11 of 11 | -0.1776 |
| Quality of life | 10 of 10 | 0.2930 |
| Overall (mean of the two pillars) | 2 of 2 | 0.0577 |
These match scores.csv exactly. The README gives the same steps with spreadsheet formulas, including how to turn the overall score into a rank.
Sources and licences
Each row in the files names its source. The table gives each source's licence and the attribution text to use when reusing its figures. Sources with no values in this snapshot are listed without attribution.

Some sources are share-alike or non-commercial. The observation files carry a short licence ID for each row, and sources.csv gives the full licence text for each source. Rows from a share-alike source keep their licence when you reuse them, so a derived table must be shared under the same licence. This site is non-commercial.
Raw survey microdata from the European Social Survey is not redistributed. Only the country-level figures derived from it appear in these files.
What these files cannot measure
- They cover economic and quality-of-life measures. Sovereignty, regulatory autonomy, migration policy and other non-economic factors are not in them.
- A rank shows where a country sits on these measures. It does not show how any country would fare under a different arrangement.
- Trends and rankings can move together without one causing the other. The files do not test causes.
